The National Wildlife Federation Habitat Challenge (often tied to its “Garden for Wildlife” and Certified Wildlife Habitat® programs) encourages individuals, schools, and communities to create and restore spaces that support wildlife. The challenge focuses on turning everyday areas—like backyards, gardens, or school grounds—into healthy habitats by providing the four essential elements wildlife need: food, water, cover (shelter), and places to raise young.

Participants are asked to plant native vegetation, reduce pesticide use, conserve water, and create safe environments for birds, pollinators, and other species. By meeting these criteria, people can have their space recognized as a certified wildlife habitat. The broader goal is to address habitat loss, one of the biggest threats to biodiversity, by mobilizing grassroots action across the country.

The Habitat Challenge also emphasizes education and community involvement. It teaches people how ecosystems function and how small local actions can contribute to larger conservation efforts. When many individuals participate, these small habitats form networks that help reconnect fragmented ecosystems, allowing wildlife to move, feed, and reproduce more successfully.

Overall, the challenge is about empowering people to actively protect and restore nature where they live, helping reverse wildlife decline and promote healthier environments for both animals and humans.

The Lebanon – the Cleanest City in Indiana campaign has been working for the last 16 years to reduce the amount of litter on the streets, while advocating and educating the public.  Now, they have joined the mission to go county wide and Beautify Boone!  This year, we had over 700 volunteers cleaning up during our big spring event.  It is never too early to start building your team for next year or schedule a cleanup anytime throughout the year!

​The District can offer trash bags, trash grabbers and safety vests for an organization that would like to clean up litter throughout Boone County.  Supplies are limited, so please make contact in advance of your planned clean up and we will do our best to help.
